Top lower back stretches for relief: banish back pain

Updated: 3 hours ago

What's up, everyone? As an athlete, I push my body hard, and that sometimes comes with aches and pains. But you know what I've learned? Lower back pain isn't just for athletes. Whether you're stuck at a desk all day, constantly running errands, or dealing with the stress of daily life, that nagging pain in your lower back can really hold you back.

I've been there, and I know how frustrating it can be. It affects your sleep, your energy levels, and your ability to enjoy the things you love. That's why I'm here to share some go-to lower back stretches that have been game-changers for me – and can be for you too!

Lower Back Stretching Exercise

Why is lower back pain so common?

Before we jump into the stretches, let's understand why so many of us experience lower back pain. It's often a combination of factors:

  • Prolonged sitting: As we discussed before, sitting for long hours can wreak havoc on your body. It weakens your core muscles and tightens your hip flexors, both of which contribute to lower back pain.

  • Poor posture: Slouching or hunching over puts extra stress on your spine and the muscles that support it.

  • Muscle strain: Lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or even just everyday activities can strain the muscles and ligaments in your lower back.

  • Lack of exercise: A weak core and back muscles are less able to support your spine, making you more susceptible to pain.

  • Stress: Believe it or not, stress can manifest as muscle tension, especially in your back and shoulders.

  • Travelling: If you are stuck on a plane, train or bus and even in your own car - chances are that you are not fully comfortable and your posture is not ideal.

As someone who puts their body through intense training, I've learned that neglecting these factors can lead to serious setbacks. But even if you're not an athlete, these issues can significantly impact your quality of life.

Effective stretches for lower back pain relief

Fortunately, stretching can be a powerful tool for relieving and preventing lower back pain. Here are some of my favorite stretches that I use regularly:

1. Knee-to-chest stretch

This gentle stretch helps to release tension in the lower back and hips.

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

  • Bring one knee towards your chest, gently clasping your hands behind your thigh or shin.

  • Hold for 20-30 seconds, then slowly lower your leg.

  • Repeat with the other leg, and then bring both knees to your chest.

2. Piriformis stretch

This stretch targets the piriformis muscle, which can compress the sciatic nerve and cause lower back and leg pain.

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent.

  • Place your right ankle on your left knee.

  • Reach your hands behind your left thigh and pull your left knee towards your chest.

  • You should feel a stretch in your right hip and lower back.

  • Hold for 20-30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

3. Cat-cow stretch

This dynamic stretch improves spinal mobility and relieves back stiffness.

  • Start on your hands and knees, with your shoulders directly above your wrists and your hips above your knees.

  • For cat pose, round your spine towards the ceiling, tucking your chin to your chest.

  • For cow pose, arch your back, let your belly drop towards the floor, and lift your head and tailbone.

  • Flow gently between these two poses for 1-2 minutes, coordinating with your breath.

4. Child's pose

This relaxing stretch gently lengthens the spine and calms the mind.

  • Kneel on the floor with your knees hip-width apart and your toes touching.

  • Sit back on your heels and extend your arms forward, resting your forehead on the floor.

  • Hold for 30 seconds to 1 minute, breathing deeply.

Take control of your back pain

Lower back pain doesn't have to rule your life. By incorporating these simple stretches into your routine, you can alleviate pain, improve your mobility, and get back to doing the things you love.

As someone who relies on a healthy back for peak performance, I can tell you that these stretches make a real difference. So, give them a try, be patient, and listen to your body. You'll be amazed at how much better you can feel!
